Housed in a former tenement building on the Lower East Side, Russ & Daughters is a stalwart of Jewish food in America—so much so that it was designated “a part of NY’s cultural heritage” by the Smithsonian Institute and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Ever since opening in 1912, customers visit their iconic appetizing counter to have smoked fish sliced in front of them by masters. It is the go-to shop for bagels & lox, smoked fish, caviar, herring and babka for locals, visitors and prominent New York chefs, including Anthony Bourdain. Essentially, if there’s ever been an icon of Jewish food in NYC, this is it. Starting with founder Joel Russ (a Polish immigrant) selling simple fare from a pushcart to support his wife and three daughters, this fourth generation family appetizing shop is one of the last of its kind—a true taste of old New York.
