Russ & Daughters

Appetizing Since 1914
Russ & Daughters
There's nothing quite like queuing up at the crowded, bustling deli of Russ & Daughters and waiting your turn to be served, drooling over the finest cured salmon, sliced painstakingly by hand. I once schlepped the makings of a Super Heebster sandwich--bagel, cream cheese, caviar, and all--to California for one die-hard, nostalgic customer. Take a bite, and you'll understand.
Maisie Wilhelm - The Margaret Mead of food

There was a time when this landmark shop was merely a man with a sack hoisted around his shoulders selling Polish produce to support his family and save up for a pushcart… which turned into a horse & wagon… which turned into an acclaimed NY appetizing shop recognized for its contributions to the historical landscape of NYC’s Lower East Side. When Joel Russ opened his shop in 1914, there were appetizing stores on every corner. Now, over a century later, Russ & Daughters is one of the last of its kind, providing tastes and traditions from the old-world from the same place on Houston Street. Housed in a former tenement building and run by the Russ family’s fourth generation, Russ & Daughters is a true taste of old NY.

We're not the only ones who love them!

Russ & Daughters was designated "a part of NY's cultural heritage" by the Smithsonian Institute and is on the National Register of Historic Places. A favorite in the press through the years, it is a top pick for many prominent NY chefs & locals.
